playing favourites

Today’s free apps stink out loud, so I thought I’d share some of my favourites instead:

Hipstamatic

Device: iPhones
Genre: Awesome time happy camera
Price: $1.99
Disclaimer: There are several in-app purchases for additional film/lens/flashes. The entire package will run you about $5, including the $1.99 app price.

For some silly reason, people ask me a lot of questions about apps as if I’m some sort of rabid app installer or something. Whenever I get the inevitable “so, what should I install first?” my answer is always the same: Hipstamatic. Even though I have an entire folder called “Cameras” full of various toys for all my bathroom stall porn shoot needs, I always go back to Hipstamatic. It is several kinds of awesome, takes wonderful pictures full of personality, and has a cool feature that allows you to shake your iDevice for a random lens/film pairing. I’ve had hours of fun with this app – my favourite is the John S lens with the Kodot film and Berry Pop flash – and I can’t recommend it enough.

QRANK

Device: Anything with an internet connection
Genre: Trivia
Price: FREE
Disclaimer: I will kick your ass.

QRANK is a free daily trivia game. You’re presented with 20 questions (often ripped from that day’s headlines) in three levels of difficulty. You only get to answer 15 questions though, so choose carefully to rack up the points. Play against friends, your city, your country and the globe. I’ve been playing QRANK since it first came out, and kept at it even though release 1.0 crashed more often than it worked. The entire app is extremely sleek, fun and frustrating – it even has a catchy soundtrack. They invite players to submit questions, so if you ever see ridiculously intricate questions about Optimus Prime .. you’ll know my question was accepted for use.

Doodle God

Device: All
Genre: drawing; blasphemy
Price: $0.99

I love Doodle God. It really doesn’t have much to do with doodling, or being God, but I love it all the same. In fact, I almost skipped this app entirely because of the name but the concept intrigued me and it’s since become a favourite. Given only four items – Air, Fire, Water and Stone – can you create the universe? I evidently can, since I’ve created all 196 items in the three updates that have been released so far. It’s why I keep saying random things like “I invented pie!” or my update on the other blog last Friday in which I invented Death Metal. It’s a really neat concept, and I can’t wait to see where the developers take it next – they’ve promised many updates, so I will sit tight with throbbing anticipation.

Yelp

Device: Any device with an internet connection
Genre: So, what do you want to do today?
Price: FREE

This app is fantastic. Use it when traveling to determine where to go to eat or play or shop. Turn the Monocle on (3GS/4) and use the very cool Augmented Reality feature. Check in at locations, and draft reviews to post on Yelp later. We used this app non-stop in Portland, and found some amazing stuff – I actually can’t wait to go to other cities and find some awesome based on Yelp’s user reviews. It’s very handy, a great way to use crowd sourcing (I know, I know) and it’s free. There’s no reason not to have it!

Phototropedelic and TypeDrawing

Device: All
Genre: Let’s make things pretty!
Price: $1.99 each

Both of these apps fall under the category of photo manipulation, but whereas Phototropedelic will change a picture you’ve already taken, TypeDrawing lets you add texty things OR create a new image entirely made of text. I’d already written about the first one on the other blog, but TypeDrawing is really cool too especially if you’re a fan of typography.

Chop Sushi

Device: All
Genre: Match 3 as a snooty prawn!
Price: $0.99

Chop Sushi was the first free game I listed on this site. While it’s no longer free, it IS only a dollar – and it’s totally worth it. Chop Sushi is one of the best match-3 games I’ve ever played, mostly because it’s different and hilarious and weird. I’ve finished the game multiple times, but I keep going back to it because the dialogue cracks me up. This is definitely a keeper for me – I love my snooty little prawn.

  1. You very truly do routinely kick my ass in Qrank.

Also, iFontMaker has blown my mind. It’s not cheap, but it’s still super cheap ($7). Create your own font. It converts it to TTP in seconds. Rinse. Repeat.
