tastes like thursday

Let’s do something a little different:

Device: iPad
Genre: Nerd Clock
Price: $0.99

This is a clock. That’s all it does. It does alarm things, and it beeps and stuff scrolls on the screen.

It even TALKS. There’s a button for “Announce Time”, and when you poke it a voice reads the time to you. It is fantastically nerdy, and therefore it is awesome.

If just a clock isn’t enough for you, here’s something with a little more zing:

LCARS Internet Media Reader

Device: All
Genre: Nerdiest RSS Reader
Price: $4.99

The LCARS reader claims to have some cool features:

  • Beeps satisfyingly
  • Works in portrait or landscape
  • Seriously, this is why you bought an iPad

.. and it’s all true. I actually bought this app before I had an iPad, and it was the first thing I installed and set up when I got my device home. It’s a fully functional RSS reader that will load blogs, Twitter, Flickr, Craigslist, eBay, videos, and more – and it looks like Star Trek. It satisfies the nerd in me on four or five levels – yes, there are other readers that do the job better, but none of those ones look like Star Trek so they fail by default. It’s expensive in iDevice terms – $4.99 – but if you’re a Trek fan and need a happy, this’ll do you good.

Dark Nova

Device: All
Genre: Trade Wars. Remember Trade Wars?
Price: FREE (originally $5.99)

Don’t spend too much time trying to figure out what a “Dack Noua” is and instead download this game while it’s free. It’s apparently an updated version of a Palm Pilot game called “Space Trader”, but that doesn’t mean anything to me – I just remember playing Trade Wars and it was awesome. If you want to relive some fond memories of pretending to be an intergalactic Gordon Gecko, check out Dark Nova. And don’t attack me if you encounter me.

Camera Sutra

Device: iPhone 3GS/4
Genre: Camera
Price: $0.99 (launch price)

I haven’t been this excited about a camera app since Hipstamatic. Camera Sutra is the same sort of idea – take pictures with applied filters for neat effects – but the effects offered are unique. Tap the screen to choose between sepia, noir, zombie, thermal, trippy, and more. It’s kind of awesome, and a lot of fun for $0.99. Check out my zombie rack!

  1. Om nom nom nom! Mmmmmm brrraaaaiinnns!

As a Trekkie/Trekker/Trekster I LOVE the first two apps. I want an iPad just to use the clock. Does it have an alarm?

  2. Ok, seriously? Now I’m really drooling to get an iPad. That is just so awesome!
